About Los Cabos, México

Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are the cities that form the tourist area of Los Cabos. They are linked by a scenic 20 mile seaside highway called the tourist corridor. It is approximately 93 miles from Cabo San Lucas to Los Cabos via Todos Santos and 113 miles from San Jose del Cabos to La Paz via East Cape.

The Los Cabos area was first discovered by Hernan Cortes in 1535 and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. Later, when the route of Manila Galleons was established, the ports of call on its coast were frequented by pirates who attacked the Spanish ships. The most famous of these explorer/pirates were Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish.

San Jose del Cabo was founded by Jesuit Father Nicolas Tamaral in 1730. In the early 1900’s Cabo San Lucas was a fishing village. In 1917 a North American company installed a floating plant for tuna exploitation. Ten years later, the Marine Products Company was established giving life to the village for many years. The many attributes of Los Cabos did not go unnoticed for long by visionary investors. Very soon, great modern hotels rose from the coast. In 1974, the federal government, through Fonatur, created the infrastructure that helped Los Cabos become one of the most beautiful, integrally planned tourist centers in the country.

In a few years, Los Cabos reached a giddy pace of development and became one of the most favorite beach destinations for international tourism, with more than 6,500 hotel rooms in all categories. Add to this, a crowd of high quality services, residential zones, condominiums, golf courses, tennis courts, trailer parks, restaurants, night clubs, bars and boutiques and you have everything that a tourist could possibly desire.

Among the many attractions in Los Cabos, a few really stand out. Sport fishing is very popular because of the abundance of species such as the marlin (black, blue and striped), sail fish, sword fish, mahi mahi and yellowtail. Scuba diving is another great activity where you can explore the famous sand falls, black coral reefs and marine fauna that inhabit the surrounding waters. Los Cabos is also famous for its beaches such as Playa del Amor, Playa Medano and Playa Hacienda in Cabo San Lucas and the long beach of Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo. You can enjoy any water sport imaginable including swimming, snorkeling, sailing and surfing.

A tour of the surrounding area will take you to interesting places like the famous arch of Cabo San Lucas, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortes; the San Jose del Cabo estuary, an ecological paradise of several species of tropical birds; Cabo Pulmo with its coral reef, unique to this latitude; Los Frailes Beach; the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve; the town of Miraflores with its leather handicrafts; Santiago with its zoo and museum of giant fossils; the municipal palace; the art garden; the blown glass factory; and the old lighthouse monument built in 1890 on The Cerro del Vigia. You will also find countless boutiques, art galleries and jewelry stores all along the colorful streets.

Come enjoy the beauty of Los Cabos. Several airlines fly into the international airport or you can reach the area by bus or car via the transpeninsular highway. Cabo San Lucas Bay also offers facilities in the marina for yachts and cruisers.
